McLendon Minority Leadership Initiative (MLI): The purpose of the McLendon Minority Leadership Initiative (MLI) is to provide minorities- known as MLI Future Leaders - a jump-start to their careers through practical experiences, opportunities to build their network, and instilling the values of John McLendon: Integrity, Education, Leadership, and Mentorship. Coaches participating in the initiative are Ambassadors of the program and will serve as mentors to the Future Leaders on their campuses. Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree to apply.

This position will gain valuable experience across a variety of units within the Rutgers University Athletic Department.  The responsibilities outlined below will be broken down by academic term (Fall, Winter, Spring) with the opportunity to gain industry experience from multiple supervisors in various important areas within the athletic department.   The Future Leader will go through a rotational program, where they will get to spend time working under and learning from various departments. 

Duration: August 2022 - May 2023

Duties and Responsibilities of the Position:

Student-Athlete Development:

  • Work within the Rutgers Office of Scarlet Knights For Life to provide guidance and influence for our student athletes
  • Participate with diversity and inclusion committees within the Athletic Department
  • Provide individualized and team support on behalf of Student-Athlete Development to our student-athletes including goal setting and career planning support
  • Work on any other related projects assigned by the leadership of Scarlet Knights For Life

Sport Administration:

  • Learn the various responsibilities it requires to oversee a sport from an administrative standpoint
  • Work closely with our coaching staff and administrators to strategically plan for the coming seasons, as well as solve any issues that arise
  • Attend sport administrator & head coaches meetings

Facilities & Game Operation:

  • Learn about the various facility projects occurring at Rutgers Athletics
  • Assist in game operations where needed
  • Attend facility & operations staff meetings

Marketing/Communications

  • Attend Communications meetings
  • Shadow game day comm operations and assist where needed
  • Assist in editing press releases, features and game notes and uploading to scarletknights.com
  • Help with historical and archival records and research
  • Attend Marketing & Communications weekly meetings
  • Shadow game day communications and marketing operations and assist where needed
  • Assist in editing press releases, features and game notes and uploading to sk.com
  • Assist with marketing research on peers and other institution’s promotional and atmosphere efforts
  • Plan and develop marketing and communications portion of external plans for assigned sport(s)
  • Support marketing with traditional and digital advertising efforts for Rutgers Athletics and team specific attendance driving and/or targeting initiatives

Business Operations
Experiences:

  • Meeting attendance – business office, third parties, etc

Development:

  • Perform donor and prospect research
  • Attend fundraising & development staff meetings
  • Assist with the coordination of annual membership drives.
